Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde is about three high school seniors about to go to uni. Charlie, a famous YouTuber and recent actress who’s bisexual and of Asian descent; Jamie, a character who’s into geek culture and movies; and Taylor, a book lover who’s really into a book series called Queen of Firestone.
The character development in this book is on point as well as the character growth. The relationships are extremely well done and relatable. You just want to be friends with these characters in real life. Jen Wilde did a pretty good job with the writing, especially when dealing with a few serious issues such as anxiety and sexual consent, but in an easy-going way.
I think my expectations were just too high for this one. It did a great job in terms of representation, diversity and discussing some very common social injustices. However, I found the story rather flat and honestly contemporaries aren’t really my cup of tea.
Overall, Queens of Geek was a fun, geeky and cute read. Most of all it is relatable and has a bunch of positivity. I recommend it to all of you contemporary fans out there.
I give this book 3.5 out of 5 stars.
Bye, keep on reading!
